No Time

September 14, 2015 Elizabeth Lindsey
no time.png

It’s 2007.
I’m with a 6-man film crew on a remote island on Micronesia called Satawal.
The island is about the size of average U.S. shopping complex.
With limited contact to the outside world,
we have no running water, no power.
It’s beautiful here, innocent in many ways.
However, when the crew and I land we discover a ‘bit’ of a problem.
There’s no transportation!
We have 5,000 lbs. of provisions, medical supplies, food, water and film equipment.
The only thing with wheels is an old, rusty cart!

The Power of Feeling Lost

9.7.2015blogpic2.png

We live in a society that doesn’t talk much about being lost.
We say things like, “I’m okay. I know what I’m doing.”
When, in fact, we lay awake in the middle of the night riddled with anxiety,
trying to find our way.

Your One Wild and Precious Life

Your One Wild and Precious Life

“Tell me, what is it you plan to do with your one wild and precious life?” The first time I read these words by poet Mary Oliver they thundered through me. They still do.

It’s taken me years, almost 60 to be exact, to understand Mary Oliver’s words.
Born in Kahuku, a plantation town on the north shore of O’ahu, I hardly thought of my life as precious. And wild? Well, that was inconceivable.

Our lives are the greatest adventure of all. As with any expedition, especially one as significant as this, we deserve the best guidance.

Day One - Mumbai

day 1.jpg

It’s 2 am.
Just landed in Mumbai.
India, it seems, is eternally under construction.
Even so, the scent of this land brings me home  again and again to myself.
The roads are empty.

The Gathering of Wayfinders in the Pacific

National Geographic’s 2012 Explorers’ Symposium ended yesterday. It was a mind-bending, week-long exploration fest. Yet, despite the most daring and innovative presentations illustrating the technology and development of the metropolitan world (and there were many), I couldn’t help but reflect on the brilliance of native cultures from the world’s most remote regions.

Pius Mau Pialiug

My teacher for ten years was a Palu, a Micronesian master navigator named Pius Mau Piailug. Mau was considered the greatest non-instrument wayfinder in the world. He could look at the first glint of light on the horizon and predict what weather conditions would be days in advance. In his teachings he would say, “Close your eyes so you can see.” What he meant was shut out the distractions of the world in order to heighten your perception. This skill is like any other we develop. It requires practice and commitment.

The Power of One

The Power of One… is one person’s willingness to help another, one person’s commitment to love the world, one person’s passion to set in motion a ripple of such magnitude that it creates a sea change.

“Tell me, what is it you plan to do with your one wild and precious life?” These words by poet Mary Oliver are especially poignant because with every expedition your life deserves the best possible map by experts who have blazed the trail.

The Journey Begins

August 23, 2015 Elizabeth Lindsey
wayfinder.jpg

I am embarking on a journey. Over the next four months I am traveling in search of the Wayfinders’ Code.

This journey is a voyage of discovery. Every culture has an innate wisdom and knowledge about how to find their way… both internally and externally. From mystics to shaman, sea nomads to navigator priests.

This journey will take me to some amazing places, and allow me to immerse myself into unique cultures and ways of being. Part of this immersion will be to embrace silence and to disconnect from the noise. There will be times I am offline, away from technology, in the most inaccessible areas.

This is my quest. To find them.  Bear witness to them.  And, if they are willing, share their stories with the world.

Connection Near and Far

It’s 5:45 pm. I’m at Vodaphone.

This could be anywhere… Paris, Frankfurt, Waimanalo… but today it’s Mumbai.

Technology, regardless of my opinion of it, has flung open a door of possibilities. Where our ancestors once gathered around fires to bear witness to one another, we now share our stories in a multitude of ways and on a host of platforms.
